z3100.

Z3100 in action.

Along with the last “proud” announcement, I am proud to announce my new photo printer, the HP Designjet Z3100 24″ wide-format inkjet printer. The Z3100 is a ground-breaking, highly regarded printer that uses HP’s Vivera pigment inks. It’s true that only serious techno-print-geeks will appreciate the sophistication and performance of a printer of this caliber. Twelve inks are used (including 4 levels of grey/black), as well as a Gloss Enhancer that reduces metamerism and bronzing.

One of the most notable features of the Z3100 is that it has a built-in Gretag MacBeth Eye-One spectrophotometer. I could get into giddy, geeky details here, but basically it means that the printer can profile itself on any paper, automagically, and you get fantastic prints that are damn near a perfect match for your monitor. The concept of profiling printers/media is certainly nothing new, but no other printer has come with such an innovative turn-key solution, and within the reach of consumers. The printer covers the completes gamuts of ISO and SWOP (used for press proofs), and with an additional piece of profiling software, it can certifiably produce Pantone spot colors.

The Vivera inks have been tested to have a 250+ year permanence rating from the Wilhelm Imaging Research. WIR is a leading independent test lab used by many in the industry to test and predict print fade resistance and durability. View the full WIR results for the Z3100. This is very exciting news for me, as print permanence is extremely important to me when I’m selling fine art prints to discerning viewers.

I know there are several of you fine artists and photographers in the area. If you ever want to jump on here and make some prints, by all means drop me a line. We can print 24″ wide and up 50′ feet long on anything from cotton rag to gloss photo paper to canvas and vellum.

This is excellent news if you were thinking about buying prints. Stop by my main portfolio page at jmvdigital.com to see pricing, options, and a good chunk of my portfolio.
