Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing
Stereogum had a posting today about backward music videos that caught my eye. I’d never really given it much thought, but there’s quite a few videos out there that are shot in such a way to make sense when played forward. Stereogum’s top 5 were God Lives Underwater, Coldplay, Mute Math, Jack Johnson (above), and The Pharcyde. I didn’t really dig their #1 pick, but maybe that’s just me; seemed monotonous. Several people commented on the site that Cibo Matto’s Sugar Water should have been on the list, and I agree. It’s an interesting split between forward and reverse lives, that switch mid-way through, yet begin and end in the same place. Neat. Jack Johnson’s video is still a favorite of mine though. Sitting, waiting, wishing.

This is fascinating. It reminds me of a story about Sid Barret, the founder of Pink Floyd. It’s said that Barret stopped by the studio randomly one day while Floyd was recording a track. Note that Barret injested so much LSD that he bacame a hermit at his mother’s house. He rarely appeared in public for the last 40 years of his life. Anyways, it’s said that while the track was rewinding, Barret picked up a guitar and played some weird notes. It just so happened that those notes were recorded. When the track was played back with his notes it worked so perfectly it became part of the final track. Sid left that day and only saw the band a few times until his recent death. These types of events are part of the great mystery surrounding earlier Floyd.
