Simon Cowell. You all know him; some hate him, some love him. I was impartial until I read a snippet of his from a 60 Minutes interview that is airing on Sunday. He supposedly signed a $100 million dollar contract, and took the opportunity to diss The Boss while he was at it.
I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen, sure. I mean, in the last five years, I’ve probably sold over 100 million records. If (Springsteen) got one hundred (million), I should have got five hundred (millon).
He goes on to say something about how he sold all those records because he’s signed “the biggest artist on the planet” (i.e. American Idol). “Every single Idol winner is now signed through Sony BMG,” says Cowell.
What a pompous ass. He doesn’t even have half the soul, depth, talent, inspiration, or skill that Springsteen has. I despise the celebrity obsession that our society takes part in. Cowell is a lonely, pitiful excuse for a man; who is only popular because of our demented desire to see the carnage taking place on the Idol stage. If you want to wallow in your money and fame, that’s fine, but there’s no need to bring down one of the most succesful and influential american rock icons ever. Perhaps it makes him feel better. Deep down, he knows he posseses no talent other than his unabashed ability to spew caustic criticisms; it makes him teary-eyed at night, clutching a tumbler of cognac.
